Food crops are less forgiving than ornamentals about sun, water and feeding — and far more rewarding when they get them. Start with tomatoes, the crop most home gardeners try first, then widen out.

Vegetables strip nutrients far faster than ornamental planting. Top up with compost between crops, and feed heavy croppers such as tomatoes through the fruiting period rather than at planting alone.
